The Chinese yarn is the product of the new mills started in Chinese yarn.
Shanghai during the past three years by Chinese and European
companies, and for them, as also for Japanese manufacturers, the
year under review has been disastrous. The price of raw cotton
rose to exceptional rates on the local market, without any corres-
ponding rise in the selling price of the manufactured article.
The result was heavy losses and decreased import generally.
Opium is a gradually vanishing import. In the 10 years Opium,
ending 1884 some 10,000 chests...”
