the war. To judge by the appearance of the woodyards on the
river above the settlement, there are large stocks on hand. A
short time ago a merchant applied for a transit pass to bring
down poles for exportation to Formosa. The authorities hesitated
to grant it, feeling sure, no doubt, that the timber was to be used...”
