paid for the raw material averaged 18-80 taels per picul (133^ lbs.) as
against 19-50 taels in 1904, and as the yarn commanded a higher
price, 79-50 taels (11Z. 19s. 2d.) per bale as against 78 taels in 1904,
considerable benefit accrued to the mill. The chief difficulty with
which it was confronted was an increase of over 100 per cent, in the
price of coal.
70 per cent, of the yam was sold in the province and 30 per cent,
in the riverine ports.
The steam flour mill, which was recently opened here, was
closed at the China New Year and no further work has been done.
For want of money to buy new machinery the quality of the
flour produced could not be improved ; as this could not be sold
profitably the firm had to cease work.
