the ability to transport the cargo to the sea from the interior by
rail. As was shown by the Commissioner of Customs at Kiaochow
in his trade report for 1904, the leading exporters are pushing this
industry to its fullest scope. They have introduced Japanese
barley seed, the straw of which is considered much superior to the
wheat straw hitherto grown. It is worthy of note that in the same
two years the export of straw braid from Chefoo declined 29 per cent....”
