The Chinese Eastern Railway Company's fleet consists of 19
vessels, which called here 163 times in 1902. The company main-
tains regular direct communication between Nagasaki and Dalny
and Shanghai and Dalny; it has also regular steamers runuing
between Shanghai and Vladivoatock via Nagasaki and Corean ports,
between Shanghai and Dalny via Corea and Port .Arthur, and
between Chefoo and Port Arthur. Inconvenience is caused, how-
ever, to shippers here, by its ceasing to run steamers direct from
Nagasaki to Port Arthur, for which place a large quantity of cargo
was transhipped at Nagasaki last year, much of it being taken on
from Dalny to its destination in sea-going lighters, which afford
insufficient protection to the cargo. The company has also services
between Vladivostock and ports in Northern Siberia.
