any considerable quantity is required by American ships, it is
brought to the port by their own Government transports and
transhipped in harbour. Japanese coal continues to be steadily Japanese,
on the increase and Kaiping is largely used for bean cake mills uneae-
and other industries. I hear the output of a Manchurian mine
will shortly be put on the market, and it is stated that contracts
have been made for the supply of 3,000 tons per month. It is dust
coal, reported equal to Kaiping, and will be made into briquettes
locally. A mine is now working at a place near Weihsien, and coal
of good quality from it is already obtainable at Tsingtao, but as
the output is still on a small scale it is scarcely enough to supply
their local consumption.
The demand for aniline dyes, which are used chiefly for dyeing Aniline dyes,
cloth, and are preferred for the brilliancy of their colours, is in-
creasing, although there is a shrinkage on last year's figures.
