Coal.—Japanese coal fell off one-third, and its more expensive
Kaiping rival barely held its own with a higher valuation. Ping-
hiang coal and coke both improved considerably, but the Lung
Wang Tung supply was very small, and the coalyard of the Peking
Syndicate on the river below the Gare Fluviale has not yet been
made use of.
Flour, bran and wheat.—In spite of the existence of four local
flour mills, Chinese and foreign, and the prospect of another under
Japanese control, and the closing down of the Wuhu mill, the
total import of flour rose from 22,674 to 23,788 cwts. The local
mills And the native wheat difficult to clean and work, and one
even imported American wheat to the extent of 66,000 bushels.
This industry, while trebling the export of bran, has not checked
the export of wheat to Shanghai and Swatow.
Glass.—The slump in prices for window glass continued through-
out the year.

“... per ton, for forward
delivery have been entered into and some dealers have already
lost heavily. Holders in the interior are nowadays kept so well
posted that it is very difficult for local dealers to make offers on a
sound basis.
Bean oil and bean cake.—The advance in bean oil is due to the
establishment of no less than five mills, of which the largest and
most prosperous, equipped with British machinery, turns out
daily no less than 3,000 cakes, weighing about 60 lbs. apiece; 2
piculs (266 lbs.) of beans should give 27 lbs. of oil and five cakes.
The Japan Cotton Trading Company is also fitting a mill to treat
beans and cotton seed. One of the present mills has not yet got
going properly, and another, fitted with Japanese machinery, has
closed owing to unprofitable results. The remaining two turn
out 500 and 1,800 cakes a day. The high price of bean oil, which
is about 19s. per cwt., while the cakes sell for about 2s. 3d. each,
makes this industry an attractive one.
Wood oil.—The wood...”
