Shanghai, by both river and ocean steamers, was comparatively
small.
A certain portion of the rice crop is annually shipped by junk
to other parts of China, and this would not appear in the Imperial
Maritime Customs returns, which only deal with trade carried in
foreign bottoms; but it is safe to say that the bulk of last year's
harvest remains to be exported during 1908.
Other exports.—Of other exports rape seed and wheat showed
some improvement, while the value of the raw silk exported rose
from 41,249Z. to 104,626Z.
Imports. Opium.—The import of Malwa opium increased by
nearly 50 per cent, and that of Patna opium by 30 per cent. The
large amount imported during the year is probably due to an
expected rise in price in the near future as a result of the arrange-
ment with the British Government to restrict the export of Indian
opium to China.
