“...District, also to Tientsin
and Newchwang. The troubles in the north have greatly affected
this trade, and the state of brigandage round Newchwang almost
cut off a valuable market.
Yarn. Cotton yarn is one of the principal items of import from the
United Kingdom and British India. The figures for the past three
years are :—
Quantity.
1899. 1900. 1901.
Indian .. . • Shanghai mills .. Cwts. 36,625 167,829 4,314 " Cwts. 25,536 131,895 1,454 Cwts. 29,223 164,636 381 120,476
The proportions of British and Indian yarn remain fairly
uniform. A noteworthy item is the appearance of yarn spun in
the Shanghai Mills for the first time, though this has been figuring
in the Yangtse Trade Returns for some years past. Japanese yarn
appears to be falling-off, doubtless because its quality does not
meet with the approval of the frugal native who wants his clothes
to stand a great deal of wear and tear....”
