Indo-China and Straits Settlements and for green tea for Manchuria
and North China markets, prices were high all through, moreover, the
quantity of leaf packed for foreigners was barely enough for their
requirements. The Russian market, owing to expanding trade in that
country and to a deficiency of supply from other quarters, had again
to draw on us for a fair quantity of tea, but I understand that Foochow
teas are not liked in that country and they are only taken from here
when other sources fail. There is a growing trade in uncoloured green
tea packed in large bales to Southern Russia, shipped under the heading
of both green tea and sorts. Some 1,234,666 lbs. were shipped to
Batoum direct and 601,721 lbs. northward, to connect with Russian
steamers in Shanghai. This tea is, I hear, consumed in Asiatic Russia
and is similar to the tea shipped from here for native use to Manchuria,
only the Chinamen require it scented with ' moklee ' flower.
