discovered. The need of the province, especially since the inaugura-
tion of the anti-opium policy, has been for some available export
which will prove sufficiently portable to withstand the strain of mule
carriage, and silk appears to be the most suitable article to meet the
present demand. Energetic measures are being taken throughout
the district to encourage the rearing of silkworms, a large number
of cocoons having been imported from Manchuria and Kueichou,
and there is every hope of a flourishing industry establishing itself.
The tusser silk is of good quality and has been favourably received
in India, a marketable supply being promised for the present year.
The transport of silk continued throughout the whole of the past rainy
season, the trade route being open to traffic during the summer months
for the first time on record owing to the improvement of the old mule
track between Teng Yueh and Bhamo.
