Beans are the staple of Newchwang, and the export consists of the beans themselves, of the oil pressed from the beans, and of the residue pressed into large cakes and known as bean cakes. The respective values in 1905 and 1906 were :— The increase in the bean cake and bean oil at the expense of the beans is due to the erection of more bean mills in Newchwang. At present there are six mills with foreign machinery (Hong-Kong make) in operation. They do not work in the winter as the weather is too cold for the extraction of the oil. The principal purchasers of bean cake, which is used for manure and food for animals, are Japan and South China. The quantity purchased by Japan last year amounted to 913,2502., being 79 per cent, of the total. Japan also purchased 168,5672. worth of beans and 7,2582. worth of bean oil.
