Plague.—Pneumonic plague, which during the early part of the year raged in Manchuria, also visited this province, though it never obtained a very strong hold. It was introduced by the Shantung' labourers who work in Manchuria and return annually to pass the new year in their homes here. Precautionary measures were taken by the Chinese authorities, but too tardily to be very effective. According to official figures, which are, however, not to be entirely relied on, 3,060 cases (the last being reported on April 9) occurred in the province. Harvests.—The harvests were fair, but a good deal of damage was done by hailstorms in the spring and heavy...”

“...51,961,561 6,995,866 2 Imports.—There has been a general falling-off, which is partly still to be attributed to the heavy losses sustained by some of the most important Chinese hongs over-speculating in opium and beans. These speculations necessitated the liquidation of about 20 different hongs, including five of the largest. The larger part of the country has been devastated by floods, which also caused a small demand. Owing to these floods thousands of emigrants are leaving Shantung for Manchuria....”
