“...from Kochiu to Pishihchai on the
French railway continues to be the subject of negotiations ; but
neither the officials nor the people are in favour of it as the traffic
is not considered to be sufficient to justify its construction.
An agreement has recently been made with the Banque Industrielle
of Tientsin, a Franco-Chinese Institution, for a loan to build a railway
from Ch'in Chou, west of Pakhoi in Kuangtung, to Yunnanfu; and,
according to the Chinese Press, the line will pass through Nanning,
Poseh, Singyi and Lo ping. At Singyi it will, presumably, link up
with the line from Shashih, the contract for which has been
awarded to a British firm. The construction of these two lines,
which will place Yunnanfu in railway communication with the
Yangtze on the north and the ocean on the south, will be of great
benefit to the trade of this province as well as that of Kweichow, for
not only will the monopoly now held by the existing line be broken,
but, as both these lines will be entirely...”
