Native yarn and native cloth.—The total quantity of native yarn imported through both customs was 12,554 piculs, valued at 447,181 taels, as against 10,117 piculs in 1912 and 4,737 piculs in 1911, and of native cloth 17,976 piculs, valued at 780,715 taels, plus 39,960 pieces, valued at 91,911 taels, from the Shanghai mills. The total value, therefore, of the native cottons imported was 1,319,807 taels, which approximates very closely to the value of the foreign cotton goods, viz., 1,419,106 taels. In view of the increasing demand for yarn and cloth from the Shanghai mills it seems likely that the small percentage in favour of the foreign products will very soon disappear. Exports.—The figures of the export trade are without doubt the most encouraging feature of the returns for 1913.
