in this trade are the British-American Tobacco Company and the
East Asiatic Tobacco Company. The former imports cigarettes of
its own manufacture from Shanghai, and also makes cigarettes from
Corean tobacco in its factory at Chemulpo. So long as the present
customs tariff remains in force, this company has little to fear from
competition with its rival, the East Asiatic Company, which is actually
the Japanese Government tobacco monopoly operating in Corea and
Manchuria. In the following table of imports into Corea in 1910
imports from China represent almost entirely cigarettes of the British-
American Companys manufacture :
