“...Native imports. Opium.Some 1,860 cwts. of native opium were imported from the provinces of Ssu-ch'uan and Yun-nan, the price advancing from 680 to 2,000 dol. per chest.
Good crops in the north of China produced high import figures for beans and bean cake; the latter is chiefly used as a manure. Bice and wheat reached high figures, while flour was imported to the amount of over 173,000 cwts., or three times the amount imported in the previous year. The excellent work done by the Shanghai flour mills is responsible for this. The effect on flour as a foreign import is naturally very marked, the figure being only one-fourth of the import in 1908.
Native exports.Native exports do not call for much comment. The fall in sugar figures was due to the damage to crops already mentioned. Kittysols seem to be working to a vanishing point; the decrease is due to the growing use by the Chinese of a cheap foreign umbrella of Japanese manufacture.
