“...1909, 6,789 cwts. Tin-plates are used chiefly
for the manufacture of kerosene oil tins, and the decrease in import
is attributed to the fact that oil importers have found it more profit-
able to forward oil to their distributing centres in bulk by car and
boat, than in tins, thus avoiding loss by leakage.
Machinery.The import dropped in 1909 to less than half that
of 1908, which was a record year. There is no doubt, however, that
with the maturing of the many schemes now on foot for establishing
mills and factories in the interior, this import will greatly increase.
It has been observed that many of the catalogues of machinery sent out
from home contain no information whereby one can gauge the out-
put of the machinery described. One of the first questions of the
Chinese inquirer, who is usually more or less ignorant of technical
details is What is the output per hour ? If an expert is not at
hand who can satisfy him on this important point, he loses all interest
in that particular machine...”
