“...more demand in Shanghai
and northern ports for Swatow sugar, the price of which went up
gradually from 1*50 to 2-00 dol. per picul. The dealers are reported
to have made some profits. At the beginning of the year the price
was 6 taels per picul, the quotation at the end of the year being
9 taels per picul. Owing to losses in 1907 a much smaller area
was put under cultivation this year, but the good price obtainable
will probably cause increased sowings for next season.
The output of sugar by the mills in this district in 1908 is
estimated to have been 700,000 piculs.
Oranges. The orange groves in this part of the country suffered
severely from the typhoon of October, resulting in a short crop and
prices above the average.
Shipping.Table 5 shows the total number of vessels entered and
cleared duiing the year to have been 2,375 vessels of a tonnage of
2,738,598 tons, as compared with 2,396 vessels of 2,689,212 tons
in 1907.
Entries and clearances of British vessels show an increase of
120 in number...”
