General Note:
Sir Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, the 1st Baron Metcalfe, who served as Governor-General of India, was named the "brightest Ornament of the Civil Service" in India on 11 December 1837 in Agra by Mr. Hamilton during a dinner party (The Asiatic Journal. V. 26, June 1938, pp. 72-73.)
