520 3    |a François Balthazar Solvyns (1760-1824) published folios of aquatint etchings delineating 'the manners, customs, character and religious ceremonies of the natives of Hindostan’ in Calcutta in 1796 and 1799. He returned to Europe in 1803, married well, and subsequently prepared a revised and technically more advanced series of etchings, which were published in Paris between 1808 and 1812. -- These prints mainly show the different castes and occupations of colonial Calcutta as distinct and immutable types. Solvyns’ work formed a prototype for the later ‘Company school’ prints of Indian types, and for the work of colonial photographers later in the nineteenth century.
