Abstract:
Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956), a self-taught artist, first went to Japan in 1915 to visit her younger sister, Elspet (‘Jessie’), who was married to J.W. Robertson-Scott, publisher of the Tokyo-based magazine The New East. She remained in Japan until 1924, travelling also in Korea, China and the Philippines. Although she made two subsequent trips to Japan in 1932 and 1936, many of the prints she produced throughout her career were based on sketches and watercolours made during her first visit.
