Notes

Abstract:
Painted during Burton’s consulship in Trieste in 1879, the picture is the work of Madame Gutmansthal de Benvenuti, a friend and amateur artist. The painting is reproduced as the frontispiece to Volume II of Isabel Burton’s Life of Captain Sir Richard F. Burton (1893). -- Burton had a wide interest in the exotic in all its forms. A formidable linguist, he served in the East India Company army in Bombay and Sindh, and then travelled extensively in Arabia, Africa and Latin America. He also translated the Thousand and One Nights and the Kama Sutra. In his later years he entered the diplomatic service, serving as consul in Fernando Po (modern Bioko in Equatorial Guinea), then Santos in Brazil, followed by Damascus before his final post at Trieste, where he died on October 20th, 1890.
