520 3    |a David Roberts (1796-1864) is best known for his folios of views of Palestine and Egypt, executed during his visit there in 1838-9. These were originally published by Francis Graham Moon in London between 1842 and 1849, and re-issued as a bound octavo volume in black and white, The Holy Land, Syria, Idomea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia (London, 1855-6). The work of the Belgian lithographer Louis Haghe in producing these prints from Roberts’ drawings, using the new double tintstone technique, was greatly admired. -- Roberts’ folios were the first illustrated works on the landscape and architecture of the Middle East that emphasised image over text, and that were produced to such high standards. Roberts and Moon marketed the lithographs aggressively with a touring exhibition in 1841, and dedicated the work to Queen Victoria.
