520 3    |a Henry Salt (1780-1827) trained as a portrait painter under Joseph Farington and John Hoppner. He was appointed secretary and draughtsman to George Annesley, Viscount Valentia, accompanying him to India, Ethiopia and Egypt from 1802 to 1806. Salt’s drawings were published in 1809, and were used to illustrate Lord Valentia’s Voyages and Travels to India [and] ... Abyssinia (1811). Salt subsequently became British Consul-General in Cairo in 1815, and built up significant collections of Egyptian antiquities, which he sold to the British Museum and the Louvre. -- The Shivite temple of Rameswaram, mostly built between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, is situated on an island off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu. A major pilgrimage site, it is closely associated with the Rāmāyaṇa and Rāma’s victorious return with Sītā from Lanka.
