520 3    |a The composition of this painting, called matooke (‘green banana’) in Luganda, is dominated by serried masses of rich greens, reds and yellow. Painted by J. Muyango, a Ugandan artist who graduated from Makerere University in the early 1960s, it still bears the student number 0285, which was required for the final B.A. fine art degree examination. This image was painted when the celebrated naturalist and artist Jonathan Kingdon was a painting tutor in the Makerere art school. It registers a shift in approach from the evocative storytelling narratives realised through pattern and rhythm of shapes developed by Margaret Trowell (who headed the art college until 1958) to the emphasis on observation from nature and technical expertise in handling materials that Kingdon advocated. This painting was purchased directly from the artist by Dr. Joan Maw who generously donated it to SOAS in 1992 (Text by Charles Gore, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.)
