Abstract:
This bowl displays the fine work and deep repousse typical of Burmese silverwork, with lively narrative and animated figures such as the ogre Ravanna and the captive Princess Sita in the Rama story. The stories are skilfully compressed Burmese adaptations of tales popular throughout the region, with the supporting creatures like Ravanna’s sister, the ogress Ma Gambi (Kambi, Shurpanakha) masquerading as the golden deer. The base of this bowl bears the sign of the maker in a large lotus pattern. (Text by John T.
