Notes

Abstract:
This bowl displays the fine work and deep repousse typical of Burmese silverwork. The stories are skilfully compressed Burmese adaptations of tales popular throughout the region, featuring lithe depictions of principal characters like the half-bird female and male kinnari and kinnara pair. The base of this bowl bears the sign of the maker in a large lotus pattern. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) ( en )
