Abstract:
This gilded lacquer manuscript is a mixture of Pali texts and vernaculars of Lanna, northern Thailand. It is delicately ornamented, reflecting its use in ritual instruction intended for public display. It would have been used as an oral text rather than for the more usual ritual recitation seen on Kammavaca, which probably accounts for the various spelling errors in the text. The text sources include one to establish boundary stones and monastic grounds, but following a type of vernacular instruction for young monks and novices. The manuscript has the rectangular form of the earliest palm leaf manuscripts, with floral motifs and birds in roundels on the cover boards, and additional floral bands on the end of each of the text folios. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
