|a This is the oldest printed book in the SOAS library and one of few known copies in the West of a Gozan-ban, or ‘Five Mountains edition’, referring to Zen monasteries of medieval Kyoto, where such books were produced. The author Juefan Huihong (1071-1128) was a Zen monk, poet and expert in Chinese poetics. Originally published in China in 1107, it comprises notes on Chinese poets and critiques of their poems. A handwritten note at the end mentions that annotations in red ink throughout the work were added in Meitoku 2 (1391), which indicates a terminal date for its publication. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) |
