Abstract:
Brown leather cover with a pressure-moulded lobed medallion painted in gilt and filled with the rosette-saz leaf motif, typical of Ottoman work. The flap bears the same pressure-moulded medallion and the doublures are of plain paper. The technique of pressure moulding became common in Ottoman bindings from the late fifteenth century, and this led to uniformity as once the matrices were made the design could be repeated with ease and lasted over long periods of time (Text by Alison Ohta, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
