520 3    |a The cover is painted in a wonderfully colourful agglomeration of flowers in reds, pinks and blues on a gold ground with small stylised birds appearing here and there. The outer border has a meander of flowers and is separated from the central panel. The doublures are in white painted lacquer with a large gold rosette in the centre. The production of lacquer in India dates from the seventeenth century, but the continual exchange of artists between Iran and India during this period makes it difficult to distinguish Indian from Iranian production. By the nineteenth century a localised Kashmiri style had evolved distinguished by its use of strong colours and elaborate floral patterns whose origins may be found in the Iranian bird and flower lacquer painting of the eighteenth century (Text by Alison Ohta, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.)
