Abstract:
This illustrated devotional Sanskrit manuscript includes five texts, usually attributed to the Mahābhārata. Illustrated are Viṣṇu as Gajendramokṣa, rescuing the king of the elephants from a crocodile and a scene from the Bhagavad Gīta of Kṛṣṇa revealing himself to Arjuna as Visvarupa. Other illustrations include Viṣṇu reclining on the multi-headed serpent Sesa and Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa in a chariot. Despite many centuries of Islamic book-illustration and the widespread use of paper in northern India, this manuscript retains the horizontal format favoured for palm-leaf manuscripts (Text by Crispin Branfoot, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
