Notes

Abstract:
This copy of the Malaysian epic of Hang Tuah dates to 1882, with the volumes in their original gilded leather bindings. The opening pages have illuminated arched frames filled with scrolls in a manner typical of manuscript arts but seen in a range of materials throughout the region. Although the author of this story of loyalty to one’s leader is not known, it is thought to date from the sixteenth century being set in the Melaka Sultanate during the fifteenth-century reign of Sultan Mansur Syah.
