Abstract:
This fine manuscript is a copy of the divan of the famous poet and mystic Jāmī (1414-92), who ranks alongside Sa'dī and Ḥāfiẓ as one of the greatest Persian poets. It is dated 941 AH (1534-35 CE) and was most probably produced in Herat, where Jāmī spent much of his life. Its opening pages are sumptuously decorated in ultramarine blue and gold, with elegant scrollwork and floral elements in red, orange, green and black. The arrangement of this decoration, with its particular palette, strongly resembles that of manuscripts produced in Herat, and its quality, together with that of the paper and the beautiful calligraphic nasta'līq script, suggests that it may have been produced for a high-ranking patron such as Bahrām Mirzā, governor of Herat from 1530 to 1534 (Text by Anna Contadini, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
