Notes

Abstract:
The manuscript depicts a Javanese version of Mahābhārata thought to date from 1903 CE. It is illustrated with altogether 56 watercolour figures. The lion-faced ogre or kirtimukha seen at the top of the opening text boxes is depicted throughout South East Asia in Hindu and Buddhist contexts as well as Islamic. Derived from the South Indian ‘face of glory’, the motif has taken on a range of new contexts, but generally is seen to serve a protective purpose. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) ( en )
