Notes
- Abstract:
- The title of the book suggests that actors are shown without makeup and costume, just as Mt Fuji appears unadorned when snow on its peak melts away. Many of the actors included in this volume are the same ones found in the Katsukawa prints described in the previous entry. A book like this is testimony to the ‘cult of celebrity’ among Kabuki fans. In the preface, the artist confesses that he actually had not seen the actors in such intimate settings, but created them from his imagination. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
