Notes
- Abstract:
- This humorous novel by Shikitei Sanba (1776-1822) records gossip that neighbours share when they meet at a public bath. The 16 volumes of the SOAS set comprise various editions that belonged to a lending library in the late nineteenth century, including a rare extant volume from the first edition (vol. 4) published in 1809, and one volume that was hand-copied from a printed version (vol. 5). The original woodblocks of the first series of the novel (vols 1-4) were destroyed by fire later in the same year they were issued, and most extant copies of these early volumes were made from printing blocks re-cut and re-issued in 1820.
