- Abstract:
- The Chengshi moyuan, a collection of designs for ink cakes compiled by Cheng Dayue (1541 —c.1616) and illustrated by Ding Yunpeng (active c.1584-1618) and others, was aimed at a discerning clientele of wealthy scholars and connoisseurs. Representing new heights of sophistication and elegance in colour printing, the pages were printed from single blocks to which different coloured inks were applied. Hand-stamped seals add a touch of vermilion to some pages. The Percival David Foundation has two copies of this famous work, an incomplete set of seven volumes dated 1606 (illustrated here), and a somewhat later complete set, without colour. (Text by John T.
