- Abstract:
- The statue, carved from a single block of stone, depicts a standing image of the Buddha. The rounded ushnisha is set forward on the head, with a lightly inscribed band separating the oval face from the hair. The shoulders are broad, both covered by the gilded robe. The line of the shoulders is complemented by the long robe tapering outwards at the hem in fish-tail folds seen on images of the Buddha from the nineteenth-century Mandalay period. The hands are both in the boon-granting Varada mudra, the forward-facing feet carved in relief on the flared pedestal forming a base (Text by Elizabeth Moore, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
