Abstract:
The morung's thatched roof slopes upwards towards the front, culminating in a great jutting gable. The front is open, except for a low bamboo fence in front. Behind this, the main pillars supporting the roof can be seen, carved with representations of men, etc. Behind this are the partitioned off sleeping quarters for the men and boys. Every six years a Morung would be rebuilt, accompanied by ceremony and feasting. In former days a fresh head would have been obtained and hung up in the Morung after each rebuilding. ( en )

This photograph is part of album J. Many of the images of this album are included in 'The Ao Nagas', which was published by Mills in 1926. They date from 1919-1920, during the period when Mills was based at Mokokchung. In 1921 the Aos numbered around 30,500 people. Their territory lay wholly within the administered part of the Naga Hills and was bounded by the Assam plains on the north-west, the Konyaks in the north-east and the Semas and Lhotas to the south west. The Dikhu River formed their southeastern boundary, and also that between the administered and unadministered areas of the Naga Hills.
