Abstract:
Julian Jacobs in The Nagas states that "the Ao, Lotha (Lhota) and other Nagas trace their mythical origin to the six sacred stones at Lungterok. Given that the stones are vehicles of fertility, it is consistent that ... they are often sexual symbols, either resembling male and female genitals, or being described as a male and female pair." The stones in these photographs may well be the ones described. ( en )

The image is part of Album C. The first part of this Album contains photographs taken when Mills was touring with J.H. Hutton in the Konyak country in October 1923. Album B. also contains some photographs taken on this tour. At the time Mills was Assistant Commissioner, based at Mokokchung, and Hutton was Deputy Commissioner at Kohima. The latter part of the Album consists of photographs from other areas. These cannot be dated, but were probably taken at about the same period.
