Notes

Abstract:
Volume of Shunʼei Katsukawa's prints of actors from kabuki theatre. This album contains 84 Kabuki actor prints mounted together, three on each leaf, including 63 by Katsukawa Shunshō (1726-92), one of greatest Kabuki portraitists of the late Edo period (see back cover illustration). This triptych, issued in about 1794, depicts Kabuki actor prints by Katsukawa Shun’ei (1762-1819), who can be identified by the crests on their costumes and characteristic facial depiction (right to left): Segawa Kikunojō III, Yoshizawa Ayame IV and Sawamura Sōjurō. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) ( en )
