Notes
- General Note:
- This print refers to an episode from a popular Ming dynasty play that is known under the following various titles: Flower boat destiny, Three smiles felicity or A drop of autumn fragrance. The protagonist Tang Bohu stands in a garden and is surrounded by eight beauties. On a visit to Suzhou Bohu sees the beautiful maiden Qiu Xiang for the first time and it is love at first sight. Despite two subsequent encounters in a temple and on a pleasure boat, he still cannot bring himself to speak to her. So desperate is Bohu’s love for her that he changes his name and enters her master’s household as a tutor. Eventually he succeeds in buying her freedom and marries her. According to Yin Huang this story is a fictitious account of the life of the famous Ming painter Tang Yin (1470-1524), who was notorious for his cavalier lifestyle. As a native of Suzhou he enjoyed a reputation not only with the dramatists but also with the printers, thus making prints pertaining to this play especially popular. The printers of Taohuawu district also felt a special attachment to Tang Yin because he had built himself a quiet retreat there, which he named Taohua hut.
