500        |a This print refers to an ancient story, which probably originated in the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC). During the construction of the Great Wall, the First Emperor (221-209 BC) ordered her husband Wan Shanliang to help build the wall. Meng Jiang travelled ten thousand li to bring her husband winter clothes. However, when she arrived Shanliang had already died. When Meng Jiang burst out in tears at the foot of the wall, it collapsed, whereupon her husband's skeleton appeared. Later Meng Jiang threw herself in the sea and drowned. It is also said that the emperor forced her to become his concubine. Meng Jiang feigned to consent but after the funeral of her husband she committed suicide by throwing herself of the wall.
