Notes

General Note:
Original bound in volume 1 of 3.
General Note:
Hand-drawn, with hand colouring.
General Note:
Also attributed to Octavian Dalvimart, engraved by various artists, and published by William Miller in a volume entitled 'Costume Of Turkey' (London, 1802). This is likely not the case as the style of this illustration is different from that of Dalvimart. Indeed, Dalvimart appears to have been a copist; his images and their settings bear a strong likeness to those of Cousinéry.

Biographical:
Marcel Cousinery was the son of Bathélemy Cousinery, a French Court Attorney and lawyer, and of Louise David, from the printers family in Aix-en-Provence. He was born in Marseille on 3/11/1759 but gained right to reside in the Levant in Smyrna, where he was possibly a state manager/bailiff/steward (not quite sure how "Régisseur" translates in English!). He died around 1795, possibly at the age of 36, in Ottoman Constantinople (present day Istanbul, Turkey). His Cousin Claude-Jules Cousinery was a consul in Tripoli (Syria/Levant) and his brother Esprit-Marie who was among other thing consul in Thessaloniki but resided in Smyrna ad Constantinople too.
