Notes

General Note:
A Borno Qur’an presumably written in the Borno Sultanate in the eighteenth century. Now in the possession of an Islamic scholar family in Konduga, North-East Nigeria. The manuscript was photographed by Abba Tijani in Maiduguri in November 2006. This is a compete Qur’an. The text area measures 15x24 cm, inner margin 33 mm, outer margin 55 mm, 13-15 lines per page (increases gradually through the volume). Many folios are repaired with stitches and paper patches, especially in lower margins. Paper is European (Venetian) with an “anchor” watermarks. There is an insert of two folios with the last twelve suras (Q107-114) from a different Qur’an manuscript, with verse dividers penned in yellow ink. The insert is of a more recent date than the main volume. The last page of the insert bears an invocation to a buttercup/crowfoot plant “ya kaykataj” (a variant of “ya kabikaj”) used against insects. The same page has a counter-mark “Andrea Galvani” referring to the famous Italian paper mill. The manuscript has many quotations from various Arabic commentaries (tafsir of al-Baydawi, al-Samarqandi, and many others) in different hands in brown and black ink. Old Kanembu annotations are mostly written interlinearly in an ink brighter than the main Qur’an text. There are several later additions in Old Kanembu and Arabic in blue ball pen.
