Notes
- General Note:
- The so called “Yerima Mustafa Qur’an” or “Geidam Qur’an” was in the possession of Yerima Mustafa, District Head of Geidam, North-East Nigeria. In February-March 1959 Bivar photographed 105 pages of the manuscript. In November 2005, the manuscripts was expanded to a complete Qur’an (754 pages) by means of digital reproduction made from a Nigerian original which was in the possession of the late Yerima Mukhtar Mustapha, the Waziri (Vizier) of Borno. Each page of MS.1YM comprises a considerable number of archaic Kanembu glosses, by far exceeding the quantity of linguistic data in other Borno Qur’ans. Therefore, the manuscript has been the primary source of linguistic analysis of Old Kanembu. Glosses in Old Kanembu are usually positioned interlineally, parallel to the main text. They are typically written above the corresponding Qur’anic text, but not necessarily aligned with it. As a general rule, interlinear glosses represent two levels of translation of the original Qur’anic Arabic: morpheme and word-for-word translations. Marginal glosses are also common, and used mainly for the third level of translation: i.e., phrase or sentence translation of either the Qur’anic text or an Arabic commentary (tafs?r). The manuscript now belongs to Yerima Mustafa Mukhtar, the current Waziri of Borno (October 2010).
