SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL STUDIES LIBRARY (UNIVERSITY OF LONDON), CLARENCE HOUSE, 4, CENTRAL BUILDINGS, MATTHEW PARKER STREET, LONDON, S.W.1. Telephone WHITEHALL 5309. Telegrams: SOSLINST,PHONE,LONDON. 11th August, 1936. Dear Mr. Hichens, I am afraid my replies to your questions are not very satisfactory [or helpful!] We have no copy of the Ummal Kura in the Library and I have not been able to trace any translation in any catalogue. It is of course possible, as you suggest, that a translation may have been published in some Journal but a cursory search has revealed nothing. If you would care at any time to come here and search the likely journals thoroughly, we should of course be delighted for you to do so. At the moment we are in vacation and all our people are away and I am not quite sure who would be able to assist you in comparing and checking parallel Arabic and Swahili. Mrs. Ashton has gone to Africa on six months leave and her place is being taken by a student, Miss Bryan, whom you may know. She is excellent at Swahili and I believe knows some Arabic, but that could easily be ascertained when she returns from Italy where she now is. Yours sincerely, [Octaires Murray Browne] Sub-Librarian. W. Hichens, Esq., Azania Press, The Burnside, Kent Road, Fleet, Hants.
