520 3    |a This scene shows the meeting of the key figures involved in the negotiations for peace during august 1900 following the defeat of the Boxers. The peace treaty itself was only signed on 17 September 1901 imposing upon China a heavy financial burden of 450 million dollars to indemnify the Allied Force. The Chinese negotiators present in this scene are the court official Ru Lu (1836-1903), Prince Duan (1861-1911), the associate Grand Secretary Gang Yi (//), the Grand Secretary Xu Tong (1819-1900), Prince Qing (//), and the official Li Hongzhang (1823-1901). According to Yin Huang the latter is wrongly identified in the print as His Excellency Wang. Li Hongzhang was well known for his ideas on reform. Yin Huang noticed that this print is stylistically related to the photolithographic method popular in Shanghai during the late 19th century. The only Allied Force envoy identified by name is the German Commander-in-chief, Field Marshal Count von Waldersee (1832-1904), while the other delegates are simply referred to as American, British and French envoys.
